PulsaCoil 3 Introduction

Sound and safe heating of water, the PulsaCoil 3 is a respected hot water thermal store cylinder in the market. Known for its effective water heating system and consistency in producing hot water, these use to be first-picks for cost-conscious contractors across England especially London.

Now, with lots of versions of the Pulsa Coil, you might be unsure of what version you currently use. Most likely it is the Gledhill PulsaCoil 3 and that is why you are on the webpage. Regardless, These system changes all the time, so you should keep an eye out on the latest developments – Stainless Steel Ecos systems are now available.

The PulsaCoil 3 is slightly more modern than many other hot water thermal store cylinders, but now is behind the Stainless and ECO Stainless options. Also the Pulsacoil 3 / III is older than the Pulsacoil 2000, Pulsacoil A Class and Pulsacoil BP. However, if you still have a PulsaCoil 3 unit it can still be repaired and maintained as long as it is not leaking at the cylinder. A Leaking Pulsacoil 3 needs to be repaced.

As mentioned before, the PulsaCoil 3 does a great job of differentiating itself from other hot water cylinders and its previous model the PulsaCoil original a brown punch bag shaped system. With immersion heater being switched on at on peak and the other immersion element being on at off peak, this heats up the water inside a PulsaCoil 3 thermal store. Using sensors known as a store sensors and DHW sensor, these attaches itself to the store PHE pipe and hot water outlet exchanger via the outlet piping. The plate heat exchanger is what transfers the heat from the water stored inside the PulsaCoil 3 to the cold water passing through it.

The Grundfos pump supplied with the unit circulated the stored hot water through the plate heat exchanger when hot water is in demand. This movement of water heats up the water to the expected temperature in a short period of time. If the flow rate of the hot water exiting the tap is too high then the pump slows down, if too low then the pump speeds up. This allows a consistent amount of hot water when in use. Usually the first 30 seconds is inconsistent when owning a Pulsacoil 3.

The PulsaCoil III can still be maintained, serviced and repairs but is an obsolete system and is no longer produced. This is due to better and more cost efficient Pulsa Coils replacing it. You cannot have installed any of the older systems, as they would not meet the same standard as systems currently in the market place and the fact that they do not have an economical pump. The Pulsacoil 3 is no more.

If you wish to buy a PulsaCoil 3, you have to buy the most modern version instead or a torrent designed system if you do not have enough space in your cupboard.

Gledhill PulsaCoil 3 Success

A major features of the Pulsacoil III/3 is it provides ho water around 52°C even if the cylinder temperature is at 78°C. This safety aspect of the system is provided by the 2 sensors mentioned previously, the pump and the Brawa mixing valve otherwise known as the blending valve. A common mistake many plumbers and contractors make is reducing the temperature of the thermostat rod to ensure no one is burnt but by doing this it doesn’t allow the system to heat up to the right amount and instead of giving plenty of hot water it gives much less. Make sure they don’t turn the temperature down in your PulsaCoil 3.

When the hot taps is opened thanks to this proportional feature, you now know that they have great amount of hot water and a steady flow rate. But if its too hot check the water level in the F&E tank. This is usually protected by the float switch so you shouldn’t need to worry about it unless someone has removed it.

The system is well protected should the temperature rise above the safety level. This is accomplished by the thermostat rods measuring the temperature of the water in the thermal store. If this fail the there is a secondary cut out built in. And if that fails then it has an overheat stat which monitors the main cylinder temperate. Some contractors replace the thermostat rods inside the immersion element for a single cut out thermostat which should not be installed in this type of system and some remove the overheat stat not knowing its importance. Be careful this does not happen to you.

Benefits of the PulsaCoil 3

The Gledhill PulsaCoil 3 was a successful hit in its time. Below is a list of reasons why it was a major success and why consumers and contractors prefer to install this type of thermal store over others available in the market place.

  • Pulsacoil 3 / III has no chance of Legionnaires. The water stored inside the thermal store isn’t the water that come out of your hot water tap so it isn’t contaminated. This is a common problem which occurs with many conventional systems but you won’t have to worry.
  • Easy to check water level in a Pulsacoil 3. Simply lift the lid of your F&E tank otherwise known as the header tank and make sure the water level is half way. Usually if the water level is low your water level LED will switch off.
  • Pulsacoil 3 / III is an open vented systems don’t require a pressure relief valve or a temperature relief valve. This gets you out of having to have it maintained yearly. Part of PART G Building Regulations.
  • High Tech Design. The look of the Gledhill PulsaCoil 3 is different to conventional hot water cylinders. It looks powerful but is complicated if you don’t know how to use it.
  • Equal water pressure on both hot and cold sides. No more weak showers due to gravity feed hot water systems. This Pulsacoil 3 / III system uses mains water pressure.

With all these point put together, it made this system the ideal hot water thermal storage tank available at the time in most peoples eyes.
